Deer Stalking Information

General

As Deer Stalking becomes more and more popular the availability of no fee deer stalking or cheap deer stalking and hunting in general is now more difficult to come by. If you are looking for stalking ground then then it's a very good idea to get some deer stalking instruction, better still obtain a deer stalking certificate level one. This will give you credibility and a certificate you can show landowners which can make the difference between obtaining the stalking and a cold rejection. Another way of attaining credibility is to join a deer stalking organisation like the British Deer Society or BASC, both of these organisations provide cost effective insurance which is an absolute necessity and is another way of improving your chances of obtaining free stalking. If you are on a tight budget and cheap and affordable deer stalking is the only option available to you it can be very helpful to offer address vermin related problems for landowners, whether this is shooting rats, or foxes if you do a good job the stalking may also come your way at some point.

If you have a budget available then another option is to look for deer stalking rights to let or deer stalking leases for sale, internet search engines like Google can help as can forums like the stalking directory.

By using any of the approaches above you will increase your chances of obtaining unaccompanied deer stalking which for most of us is the ultimate goal. If the above approaches are unsuccessful don't be disheartened keep trying and you will be successful, in the interim you could consider a Dauntsey guided stalking experience. We have a number of packages and can also tailor a course to suit your needs. We work with a number of experienced local stalkers who can normally satisfy your needs.

If you are new to stalking then we strongly recommend our experiences as you will learn a great deal, as we say you never stop learning ever. It is very easy to be unsuccessful when you start stalking and any knowledge you can gain will help you when you are stalking alone. If you are considering taking up stalking then we have provided some basic guidelines below to help you get started.

Obtaining a firearms certificate

If you are totally new to shooting and do not have a firearms license then you will probably struggle to obtain a Deer stalking calibre rifle at first application. The first stage of obtaining an FAC is normally to apply for a slot for an FAC rated air rifle or rim fire rifle. The most common example and one of the best rifles available is the .22LR. This is still the best calibre for shooting rabbits as it causes the minimum amount of flesh damage. The .22 LR has limited range and power though and is typically zeroed at between 50 and 60 yards. Another rim fire rifle which has become very popular is the .17 HMR. Many police areas prefer to issue slots for the .17 because it is less prone to ricochet than the .22LR The other main rim fire calibre is .22 WMR, this is one of our favourite calibres as it a more capable fox rifle than the .17 and can also be used to head shoot rabbits at longer ranges.

Deer stalking calibres

Having successfully obtained your FAC and gained experience using it the next stage is to apply for a variation for a Deer calibre slot. While it is legal to shoot Muntjac and Chinese water deer with a .22 calibre rifle with a .22 calibre rifle with over 1000 FTlbs of muzzle energy a .240 calibre is the minimum calibre which can be used for Roe Fallow and Red Deer. The most common slot granted to new stalkers is for a .243 calibre rifle. In most cases there will be an accompaniment restriction for the use of this rifle which means you cannot use the rifle unless an experienced stalker is with you.

If you are serious about stalking then a DSC1 course should be given serious consideration, not only will you learn and enjoy the experience, but passing this course will also mean that the accompaniment restriction can be removed from your FAC.

Deer stalking hygiene

An added benefit of the DSC1 course is that it includes the Large Game meat Hygene accreditation which allows you to inspect the carcass yourself and supply game dealers with Venison. The DSC1 course also includes all aspect of deer stalking regulations including the deer stalking season in the uk as these differ between Scotland and England.
